Every Note You Play by Mika Kaurismäki was made at The Prequel of the second Monheim Triennale in summer 2024. Kaurismäki documents a musical experiment, the encounter of internationally renowned musicians who meet for the first time and make music together, capturing the unique moment in which music is created. Director Mika Kaurismäki immerses himself in this creative state of emergency with his camera, visualises the diverse and unique process with his unique signature and asks the big question: What is creativity?

Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki ushered in a new era in Finnish cinema in the early 1980s with his first feature film The Worthless (1982). He is known for his diverse work spanning several decades, and with more than 40 films in his filmography, he is one of Finland’s most prolific film directors. In addition to feature films, Mika Kaurismäki has also made several award-winning documentaries, including Mama Africa (2011) about Miriam MakebaBrasileirinho (2005) about Brazilian choro music; and Tigrero – a film that was never made (1994) with Samuel Fuller and Jim Jarmusch.
